Description
The Great Goddess hypothesis theorizes that, in the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic periods, a singular, monotheistic female deity was worshipped prior to the development of the polytheistic pagan religions of the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The mother goddess is a personification of nature, motherhood, fertility, and creation who embodies the bounty of the Earth. Sometimes referred to as Mother Earth she is the feminine counterpart of the Sky Father or God the Father.
This portrayal of The Mother Goddess in a pop surrealist manner and soft brushstrokes captures her being worshiped in her natural environment, which in this case is a prehistoric cave surrounded by cave paintings. She appears in a voluptuous and sensual pose symbolizing her power to give birth to the Earth. You can see her illuminating from within as her divinity shines through. Her glance is confident and joyful portraying her strength as a nurturing mother.
This popular view is mainly driven by the Goddess movement and believes that primitive societies initially were matriarchal, worshipping a sovereign, nurturing, motherly earth goddess. The worship of the mother goddess and the social position that women in prehistoric societies supposedly assumed evokes an egalitarian matriarchy of earlier times. This form of society is supported by many figurines that were found.
